Dog Coat Size Chart & How to Measure Your Dog
Our size number is roughly your dog's back length in inches.
Measure the back and the chest, tell us the coat type, and the finder picks a size in every coat. No breed charts, no weight guessing.
- Measure with your dog standing, using a soft tape.
- Between sizes? The smaller size usually fits better. A coat that's too big is the fit problem we see most.
- Not sure? Send us both numbers and a side photo. A real person picks with you.

How to measure
How to Measure a Dog for a Coat
Back length and chest, measured the same way for every coat we make. Most sizing mistakes happen with the tape, not the chart.
1Back length
Dog standing straight. From where the neck meets the back (just in front of the shoulder blades), along the middle of the spine to where the tail starts. Measure 3 times and use the middle number.
2Chest
Around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Tape snug, one finger of room. Fluffy dog? See below.
Pull the tape snug around the chest once. What the fur does tells you how to measure.
Fur presses flat
Lab, Golden, most Shepherds, Doodles
Keep it snug, one finger of room. Use that number.
Fur stays puffy
Samoyed, Husky, Malamute, Old English Sheepdog, long-coat Shepherd
Let the tape rest on top of the fur. Don’t press it down.
The coat has to fit over the fluff too. Puffy fur adds about 2″, and the finder takes it from there.

Puddle Jumper raincoat
| Size | Back length | Chest up to |
|---|---|---|
| 24 | 22–25.5″ (56–65 cm) | 34″ (86 cm) |
| 26 | 25.5–27.5″ (65–70 cm) | 37″ (94 cm) |
| 28 | 27.5–29.5″ (70–75 cm) | 40″ (102 cm) |
| 30 | 29.5–31.5″ (75–80 cm) | 43″ (109 cm) |
No tail drawcord, so pick by back length carefully. Under 22″ it will run large.
Snow Warrior snowsuit
| Size | Back length | Chest up to |
|---|---|---|
| 25 | 23–27″ (58–69 cm) | 34″ (86 cm) |
| 27 | 27–29″ (69–74 cm) | 36″ (91 cm) |
| 29 | 29–30.5″ (74–77 cm) | 40″ (102 cm) |
| 31 | 30.5–32.5″ (77–83 cm) | 42″ (107 cm) |
Full leg coverage and no stretch across the chest. Fluffy coat that won’t press flat? Measure the chest on top of the fur, so the snowsuit has room for the fluff.
Cozy Hugger fleece jacket
| Size | Back length | Chest up to |
|---|---|---|
| 25 | 23–26.5″ (58–67 cm) | 35″ (89 cm) |
| 27 | 26.5–28.5″ (67–72 cm) | 39″ (99 cm) |
| 29 | 28.5–30.5″ (72–77 cm) | 41.5″ (105 cm) |
| 31 | 30.5–32.5″ (77–83 cm) | 45.5″ (116 cm) |
Stretch fleece with rear leg loops. Our most forgiving fit.
Tag says S, M, L or XL? Same coat, same fit: raincoat S = 24, M = 26, L = 28, XL = 30; winter coats S = 25, M = 27, L = 29, XL = 31.
When to adjust
When the chart alone isn't enough
The finder does all of this for you. Here's what it's thinking.
Between sizes
Take the smaller one. A coat that's too long bunches at the legs and hangs at the belly, and male dogs can wet it.
Broad chest, between sizes
A deep chest needs the room. Take the bigger one and cinch the drawcords for length.
Chest past the chart
We can't add width, so the chest decides. It will run a little long; the drawcords take that up.
Short legs and the Snow Warrior
Its full-length legs can run long on short-legged dogs. Roll the cuffs up like a shirt sleeve; they sit a little loose once rolled.
Back under our smallest size
Raincoat under 22″, winter coats under 23″: they'll run large. We'll tell you straight.
Back over 33″ or a very deep chest
Our largest sizes have some room past the chart. Send us the numbers and we'll tell you honestly.
Each coat fits differently
How each coat fits
Puddle Jumper
Raincoat · full legs
Our lightest coat, with elastic cuffs that take up a little extra leg.
- No tail drawcord: back length matters most
- Short legs: slide the elastic cuffs up
- Middle drawcord snugs the belly
- Longer neck pulls up over the head like a hood
Snow Warrior
Snowsuit · full legs
Layered and windproof, so it doesn't stretch across the chest.
- Deep chest or puffy coat: don't size down
- Short legs: roll the cuffs up
- Tail drawcord shortens the back about 2–3″
Cozy Hugger
Fleece · front sleeves, rear leg loops
Stretch fleece and an open back end. The most forgiving fit.
- Open back end, easy on curly tails
- Tail and middle drawcords for a snug fit
- No leg sleeves at the back to trip on
Real dogs, real fits

Fit tips
Got it on? Make it fit.
Middle drawcord
Pull it snug so the coat hugs the body. Keeps male dogs from wetting it.
Tail drawcord
Snowsuit and fleece: shortens the back about 2–3″.
Neck
Slides back toward the tail? Tighten the neck drawcord a little.
Cuffs
Legs a bit long? On the raincoat, slide the elastic cuffs up the leg. On the snowsuit, roll the cuffs up like a shirt sleeve; they sit a little loose once rolled.
Other sizes
Human Raincoat and Bandana Sizes
Measured differently from our dog coats, so they have their own charts.
Human raincoat
Puddle Jumper Human Raincoat · matching raincoat sets
Step 1: Take measurements
Chest: under the armpit, measure around the chest at the fullest point.
Waist: measure around your natural waistline, typically where your body bends side to side.
Hip: measure around the fullest point of the hip.
Step 2: Find the right size
Compare your measurements to the size chart. If they point to different sizes, choose the bigger one. For example, if your waist and hip say S and your chest says M, choose M.
Between sizes? Go with the smaller size for a snug fit, or the larger size for a relaxed fit.

Dog bandanas
Lace · Festive · Tuxedo bandana · Mom & Pup set
Step 1: Measure the neck
Wrap the tape around the base of your dog's neck, or simply measure your dog's collar.
Step 2: Find the right size
Pick the bandana size that matches your dog's neck. Choose the larger size if:
- the neck falls between sizes,
- your dog has a thick coat, or
- you'd like the bandana to sit loose.

FAQ
Dog Coat Sizing FAQ
Can I pick a size by my dog's weight or breed?
No. Dogs of the same weight or breed often need different sizes. Back length and chest are what decide the fit.
My dog is between sizes. Which should I pick?
Usually the smaller size. Go bigger only if your dog has a broad chest. The finder handles this for you.
My dog has a thick, fluffy coat. Do I measure over the fur?
Pull the tape snug around the chest once. If the fur presses flat (Goldens, Labs, most Shepherds, Doodles), use that number. If it stays puffy (Samoyed, Husky, Malamute, Old English Sheepdog), let the tape rest on top of the fur without pressing it down. The coat has to fit over the fluff too.
Will my dog wear the same size in every coat?
Not always. The snowsuit doesn't stretch across the chest, and the fleece is the most forgiving. The finder shows each one.
My dog is a puppy. Should I buy bigger so they grow into it?
Buy for the dog you have today. A coat that's too big now slips and tangles. Exchanges are free when they grow.
Can I use centimeters?
Yes. Switch the finder to cm.
What if it doesn't fit?
Exchanges are free. Try the drawcords first: most "a bit big" coats fit once they're snugged up.
